SUBJECT/PROPOSAL/REQUEST: Approve scheduling a public hearing to consider an increase in compensation for members serving on the Planning Commission and other Boards that are compensated under the County Code.

BACKGROUND: Albemarle County Local Government provides compensation to members serving on the following Boards and Commissions, at rates codified in the County Code: the Architectural Review Board, the Board of Zoning Appeals, the Equalization Board, the Fire Prevention Board of Appeals/Local Board of Building Code Appeals, and the Planning Commission.

As part of the Board's Fiscal Year 2024 budget discussions, the Board requested staff to research when the boards and committees last received a compensation increase and to develop a recommendation for Fiscal Year 2024.

STRATEGIC PLAN: Mission - To enhance the well-being and quality of life for all community members through the provision of the of the highest level of public service consistent with the prudent use of public funds.

DISCUSSION: Adjustments to pay for the Planning Commission and other Boards have not been consistently applied over time. During the April 19 Board meeting, staff advised that no record of an increase in compensation has occurred since Fiscal Year 2001, and recommended that the Planning Commission and other Boards receive the same increase in compensation that the Board had during that period of time, including the increase planned for Fiscal Year 2024 as part of the budget process. In future years, staff intends to bring forward consideration of the Planning Commission and other Boards' compensation during the budget process.
