BACKGROUND: The Board of Supervisors met on March 23, 2022 for a dedicated budget work session related to the community’s athletic fields. With the support of a consulting engineer and the Albemarle High School Athletic Director, staff presented information to facilitate a Board discussion regarding:
- Fields inventory and existing needs assessment
- History of the project to add synthetic turf fields and lighting at Darden Towe Park
- A pre-design study conducted before the project was paused during the pandemic
- An update on the evolution of the approach for athletic fields the intervening years
Staff were directed to schedule another work session to answer questions raised by the Board at that meeting, as well as any subsequent questions Board members submitted in writing.
STRATEGIC PLAN: Infrastructure Investment - Prioritize, plan, and invest in critical infrastructure that responds to past and future changes and improves the capacity to serve community needs.
DISCUSSION: Staff will present a summary of questions posed by members of the Board regarding Multi-Use Athletic Fields, to include existing amenities, practices and related operational procedures; natural grass turf fields; synthetic turf fields; athletic field lighting; and other matters relating to potential future projects.
BUDGET IMPACT: Any direction from the Board resulting from this work session will be accounted for in the Fiscal Year 2023 Proposed Budget.

Staff recommends the Board receive the update and provide direction to staff as appropriate.
