BACKGROUND: The Solid Waste Alternatives Advisory Committee (SWAAC) was established by the Board at its March 2, 2016 meeting as a standing advisory committee. The Committee is charged with developing sustainable materials management policies for consideration by the Board including those related to waste and litter reduction, material reuse, recycling and composting, greenhouse gas reduction, waste collection and transfer operations and waste disposal. The Committee provides semi-annual reports to the Board on initiatives and work planning and provides specific policy proposals as they are developed.
STRATEGIC PLAN: Natural Resources Stewardship: Thoughtfully protect and manage Albemarle County's ecosystems and natural resources in both the rural and developed areas to safeguard the quality of life of current and future generations; Quality Government Operations: Ensure County government's capacity to provide high quality service that achieves community priorities.
DISCUSSION: The Committee has met monthly since June 2016. The Committee submitted its first semi-annual report in February 2017. The Committee submitted a request to extend operating hours at McIntire Recycling Center June 2017 and submitted second and third semi-annual reports in August 2017 and February 2018, respectively. The attached report is the fourth semi-annual report for the Committee.
