BACKGROUND:  The purpose of this presentation is to provide Board members with information related to emergency management and the necessary and appropriate role of elected officials. This material is being provided in response to interest from Board members following a number of emergency events over the course of the past six months which involved collaboration among various public safety entities at the local, state, and federal level.

 

STRATEGIC PLAN: Quality Government Operations: Ensure County government’s capacity to provide high quality service that achieves community priorities

 

DISCUSSION:  In the past six months, the County of Albemarle and its residents have experienced: 

 

                     An Amtrak accident involving US Congressional leaders

                     Brush fires in the southern part of the County

                     High wind events

                      A plane crash

 

The Charlottesville-UVA-Albemarle Office of Emergency Management, Albemarle County Fire Rescue (ACFR), and the Albemarle County Police Department (ACPD) have partnered to provide a synopsis of the Regional Emergency Operations Plan, an overview of Albemarle’s management of emergency events, and a discussion of the role of Board of Supervisors members before, during, and after an emergency.

 

Specific guidance is provided in the Charlottesville-UVA-Albemarle County Elected Official and Executive Staff Guide to Emergencies and Disasters (Attachment A).
