BACKGROUND: On September 4, 2019, the Albemarle County Board of Supervisors (Board) adopted a resolution to support an FY21 application for funding for a 0.41-mile extension of Berkmar Drive from its terminus at Timberwood Boulevard (at the time of application) to the intersection of Airport Road and Lewis and Clark Drive. The project included a roundabout at the new intersection of Berkmar Drive, Airport Road, and Lewis and Clark Drive, as well as bicycle and pedestrian facilities along the extension of Berkmar Drive. This application for funding through the Virginia Department of Transportation's (VDOT) Revenue Sharing program was successful.

The Board reaffirmed its commitment to this project on September 6, 2023, when the Board adopted another resolution, this time to support a FY24 application for additional funding through the Revenue Sharing program to address project cost increases. VDOT's Revenue Sharing program provides up to $10 million in state funding for local projects over the lifetime of the project. Successful Revenue Sharing applications require a 50% local match.
