TITLE:
Authorize a Public Hearing for a Compensation Increase for Planning Commission and Other Appointed Boards

SUBJECT/PROPOSAL/REQUEST: To schedule a public hearing to consider an increase in compensation for members serving on the Planning Commission and other appointed Boards compensated under the County Code.

BACKGROUND: Albemarle County Local Government provides compensation to members serving on the following Boards and Commissions, at rates codified in the County Code: the Architectural Review Board, the Board of Zoning Appeals, the Equalization Board, the Fire Prevention Board of Appeals/Local Board of Building Code Appeals (the "Other Boards"), and the Planning Commission ("PC").

On June 7, 2023, the Board of Supervisors adopted an ordinance which increased compensation for members of the Other Boards and PC at the same rate of increase that Board of Supervisors ("BOS") members received. Since that time, it has been the expressed desire of the BOS to increase pay in this same manner in subsequent years.

DISCUSSION: With the FY27 budget adoption on April 22, 2026, the County implemented a 2% Cost of Living Adjustment for classified staff, effective July 1, 2026, to support increasing wages in response to inflation and to remain competitive with employers in our area. On June 17, 2026, the Board of Supervisors will hold a public hearing in consideration of increasing compensation for BOS members by 2%, in alignment with the staff increase.
