BACKGROUND: Virginia Code § 15.2-1508 authorizes the Board of Supervisors to provide monetary bonuses to County employees through the adoption of an ordinance.
STRATEGIC PLAN: Workforce & Customer Service - Recruit & retain engaged public servants who provide quality government services to advance our mission.
DISCUSSION: The proposed one-time bonus reflects thoughtful consideration of the FY 2027 cost-of-living adjustments and bonuses authorized by employers in the County’s competitive labor market, including the Commonwealth of Virginia and other state employers in the area. In determining this approach, the County considered the importance of maintaining competitive compensation and supporting the recruitment and retention of a qualified workforce. The FY 2027 adopted budget included funding for a one-time bonus equal to 2% of annualized base salary for eligible employees in positions assigned to the County’s classified pay scale. The bonus will be paid on December 18, 2026, with prorated amounts for eligible part-time employees based on their approved FTE allocation.
BUDGET IMPACT: Funding for the one-time bonus was approved and allocated by the Board of Supervisors as part of the FY 2027 budget adoption. The total amount of funding reserved for the bonus is $1.097M, inclusive of applicable payroll taxes.
